...and the skill to soundly beat them.
I sincerely hope they get to that stage again. Partnership with Maserati is a good thing, but I fear that they won't succeed.
What with Saab gone, PSA in trouble there will pretty much just be Jaguar, Renault (just) and Volvo making aspirational cars in Europe that aren't German.
I like the Germans, I like lots of German cars, but a market solely comprised of them holds precisely zero interest to me.
If it goes this way, I may just have to follow Mr Farnsworth:

I don't think we can't talk about a partnership, when Fiat owns both brands, is more like employees of the same company working together. And with Fiat announcing a new platform for Alfa, next April, with details already leaking out, I can tell that the formula is right, how they will execute that plan, we will have to wait and see.
And, if this fails, you can also go to the Japanese, and Cadillac.
They can do red cars well, too.

The Cadillac is fantastic, and is one of the American cars that I respect greatly.
The two Japanese cars make me wonder what the hell the designers were thinking. I know that the culture of aesthetics is a bit different over there, but to me they just look like discordant messes.
I think I'll just have to stick with Jags, providing their current roll continues.
Actually, I wonder if there's an option to rebadge and change the faces of Cadillacs to keep Holden as a producer of big V8 saloons...

Well, the Cadillac has been criticized for being too conservative, I mean even the new CTS looks more daring than the ATS, as for the Japanese, in reality they look better than in the pictures, if you move around them, observes the shapes, curves and angles, and try to understand what was in the designer's mind, you will discover that they are bold, and different and a nice departure from the Germanic premium design, they're like casual suits, in a closet full of black suit/white shirt/red "power tie", closet.

Now that you mention it, I do appreciate that they are different to the Germans. It's refreshing. They're just not to my tastes.
